He founded the third largest bus company in the world. Raghunandan Saran founded Ashok Motor named after his only son, in 1948. it started with assembling & manufacturing Austin cars. He realised that the market in indian vehicles lay in trucks and buses, to serve the public and not cars that served only a few. Saran was contemplating the manufacture of chassis for motorised public transport and later forged an alliance with British Leyland. British Leyland joined in 1954 then Ashok Motor was renamed as Ashok Leyland and commercial vehicle started to roll out. The coloration ended in 1975.
